New Years Day Ride

What better way to celebrate the new year than with a morning ride? Today I woke up early to meet the Griffith Park Dope Peddalers for a long ride up to Mt. Wilson. I had to ride from my house, which was 10 miles away, to the meeting point at Mt. Gleason and Foothill. The "warm up" wasn't terrible, but it was 37 degrees out.... About 8 other Dopers showed up for the ride and we were ready to start our long climb to the top. We got about 25 miles in and all started feeling the chill at the top. We even rode over some black ice. Once we hit the Angeles Crest HWY split we decided to call the ride a little short and make our way back, via the scenic loop. The group stopped at the closed ranger station for a snack and some water refills. Two guys left to climb red box, 5 miles away, and only another 5 miles from the top of Mt. Wilson. The rest of us headed down HWY 2. The road was washed away a year ago, so they have been repairing it since. Luckily its still closed to cars. It was a fast and chilly descent filled with beautiful views of LA and the valley. Once down the remaining 7 of us ride back through Glendale into La Canada. From there I went back home. Here is the loop.... I was able to use my new Garmin Edge 500 with heart rate and cadence.
